As part of the team led by renowned Portland, Orgeon planners Fregonese Associates, ABMB was selected in 2009 as the Lead Traffic & Transportation Engineering firm to develop this far-reaching planning effort. The endeavor would involve the study and planning for dozens of key components which have major influence on the future vitality and growth of the Baton Rouge area, including future land-use, traffic circulation and mass-transit, sanitary sewer and drainage, conservation and environmental resources, recreation and open space, housing, development and redevelopment, and methods of financing to implement recommendations. The team completed its study in late 2011, culminating in policy recommendations regarding each of these elements and methods for its implementation, in part, by the adoption and enforcement of appropriate land development regulations. ABMB also performed a Comprehensive Operations Assessment and Feasibility Study on the Capital Area Transit System (CATS) as part of this overall effort. The team also presented goals and an implementation plan in regards to CATS improvements. The project was adopted unanimously by the Metropolitan Council in September 2011.
FUTUREBR is currently in the implementation phase, with city officials in the process of adopting planning and zoning recommendations. Civic and community organizations, such as the East Baton Rouge Parish Redevelopment Authority, have also taken some redevelopment initiatives under their wings and are forwarding aspects of the accepted plan.
