Ramp Metering To Start On I-435

LEAWOOD, Kan. -- Kansas City Scout officials began testing a new ramp metering system Thursday night in preparation for the meters going live next week.

The new ramp meters are installed at on-ramps to Interstate 435 along the southern portion of the freeway that loops around the metro. The onramps featuring the meters run from Metcalf Avenue in Kansas to the Three Trails Crossing in Missouri.

Meters are used throughout the country to help with traffic congestion and cut down on accidents, KC Scout officials said.

The meters feature green and red lights that are activated when traffic levels are high. The meters let through one vehicle per green light. KC Scout officials said sensors in the pavement will help dictate when the meters go on.

KC Scout officials have also said that if traffic backs up onto city streets, they will shut off the meters. Engineers in Overland Park, Leawood and Kansas City, Mo., said they have all worked with KC Scout on the program.

KC Scout officials said the meters will go live Tuesday.
