ABMB / Continuous Flow Intersections / History of CFI

Over the years, CFI has gained momentum as a viable solution to congested intersections.  Recently, the CFI concept has made great strides into moving into mainstream. On March 21, 2006, the CFI at Airline Highway and Siegen / Sherwood opened to traffic. ABMB is proud to have pioneered this intersection through construction. ABMB proposed the concept, completed the study and designed the roadway plans and construction documents for this intersection. This two-leg implantation is the first of its kind in the United States. Since the opening, the intersection has received praise from LADOTD and City officials, the police, media, and most importantly, the driving public.

Over 40 continuous flow intersections have proven their value in Mexico during the last decade, where they have reduced congestion and are well-accepted by motorists. In the United States, a prototype was built at Dowling College in New York, followed by a full-scale project in Maryland, at the juncture of State Highway 228 and State Highway 210, approximately 15 miles south of Washington, D.C.

The Maryland intersection, which was constructed under the auspices of the Maryland State Highway Administration, received the prestigious Francis B. Francois Award for Innovation from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) in 2002.

Currently CFI’s are under design or construction in Utah, Ohio and Mississippi. In addition, CFI is receiving serious consideration in Arkansas, Maryland, and Texas.
